Most of the Delhi University teachers went on the strike called by the Federation of Central Universities Teachers’ Association to protest against the UGC/MHRD circular on withdrawal of exemption from NET to PhD/M Phil holders on Thursday.
However the strike was not complete as some of the teachers thought that the reasons were not good enough to go on a strike. But this strike provided a much needed break to the freshers who had barely got over the exam stress. Students couldn’t have asked for more, with the rain acting as the topping on the cake.

Yesterday, when I reached my home after a hectic day at office, my roommate told me that one of his relatives is coming to meet him in half ‘n’ hour. He told me that his relative has done engineering in Electrical & Electronics (passed out in 2008) and was looking for a job. He belongs to Uttaranchal and came to Noida just to find a job.
He came with one of his friend who was also looking for a job (an engineer in I.T, passed out in 2008). We set down and started talking; he asked if we have some references that can help him in getting a job. Some of my roommate’s friends are working in good telecom companies. So he started calling each one of them to know if they can help in some way. But all of them said that their organization is not recruiting freshers and they could have helped if the guys had an experience of at least a year.

The Monster of Recession
Both the guys seemed a little frustrated with their situation and said they were ready to do any job and don’t need high salary. I told them it’s not their fault they probably finished their engineering at the wrong time. As we were talking about the recession, one of the guys got a call from his friend. The person who called him said that there was an opportunity for freshers for some training in a telecom company. But they need to reach Ferozabad (near Agra) by tomorrow morning for attending the interview.
Without even giving a second thought the guys started to plan for leaving. He started calling his friends to enquire about any bus or train that they can take to reach there by morning. I was amazed to see their will, it was already 9:00 P.M and I was wondering how the guys gonna manage to reach there at that time.
I was amazed at their will and angered at their situation, how they must be feeling after having completed reputed courses. One of the guys who did engineering in I.T was very frustrated and kept on repeating that he didn’t want to make a career in IT or software.
I sat down and wondered how this bloody recession is killing the dreams of a young boy who dreamt of becoming a top-notch I.T professional.

Hillary Clinton
When Hillary Clinton had last visited India in 1995, a student of
Lady Shri Ram College had presented her a short poem. Clinton was very impressed by that poem and even mentioned it in her autobiography.
This poem was written by Anasuya Sengupta, she was asked by the college Principal to write a poem to be presented to Hillary. On her visit to The Delhi University on Monday, Hillary even recited some lines of the same poem, written on the state of women across boundaries.
Anasuya Sengupta, who is a writer and activist now, was a special guest at the talk delivered by Clinton. And she was amazed to see such a public acknowledgement from Clinton.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
After the visit of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in January last year who was invited to DU for conferring an honorary degree on him, it’s the turn of none other than the US secretary of state Hillary Clinton to visit the Delhi University.
Clinton expressed her desire to come for a talk in the Delhi University. She is coming on Monday, July 20th and may talk on education and Indo-US relations.
Clinton is expected to deliver her speech at the convention hall in the Old Vice Regal Lodge in DU. But the bad news is; only a few students will be allowed on invitation.

Nobody would have expected this but on the first day of college on Thursday; most of the freshers were seen begging to be ragged by their seniors who gave them the cold shoulder.
The senior students stayed away from even talking to the newcomers because of the tight security by Delhi Police and a strict anti-ragging campaign by the Delhi University. As a result, most of the freshers who think a little ragging is fun as it provides freshers an opportunity to interact with the seniors, were left craving for ragging.

Colleges like Hindu college had even banned the senior students from having any ‘‘introduction’’ with the freshers. Seniors were surprised to see the freshers coming to them and requesting to be ragged. But, because of the strict anti-ragging measures, most of the seniors chose to stay away from the freshers.
However some colleges like Kirori Mal, Shri Ram College of Commerce and Hans Raj did have some fun where some newcomers were asked to sing the songs and dance. The students might be surprised but the colleges had a sigh of relief with no incident of ragging being reported on the first day.
